Where: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Base Cost: $1,600 (Airfare (to/from SGF or TUL), meals, lodging, ground transportation, and excursions are all included within the Base Cost for the trip. Snacks, souvenirs, and baggage fees are not included.)
Registration Fee: $150 to hold your spot
Ministry Money: $100 per person for supplies 

Payment plans:

• $350 per month (for four months; September, October, November, December; due on the 1st of each month)

• Half of the total by October 1 and the final payment by December 1

We plan to have a couple fundraisers throughout the semester to help defray the cost. Those details are TBD, but each student who wants to participate must be present at these fundraisers to receive funds toward their trip. 

In the past, the work in Puerto Rico has been working on churches or homes, homeless ministry, nursing home ministry, or disaster relief. We will have some time at the beach, perhaps the jungle, and to visit Old San Juan. 

We hope to have an interest meeting in September with more details. Final day to register is October 1.

Location: Puerto Rico

San Juan and the beaches of the US territory of Puerto Rico are popular tourist destinations. Yet just outside the commercial zone, locals living in a number of smaller villages face the everyday challenges typical to the Caribbean. Our work in Puerto Rico will be centered in one of these smaller communities.

Projects: Construction or Repair, Homeless Ministry, Children or Senior Adults

We will be working under the direction of a local construction manager to either build new structures (churches, schools, or homes) or repair structures damaged by recent or past hurricanes. We’ll also take time to deliver meals to the local homeless and work with either children or senior adults.

Accommodations: Bunkhouse

Lodging will be provided by Praying Pelican Missions that has been operating in Puerto Rico since 2007. They will supply bunkhouse accommodations (@ a local school, church, or community center) with restrooms and showers. PPM will also supply all meals, consisting mostly of local cuisine.

Travel:

We are joining forces with Drury University Wesley and so travel options include round-trip from either Springfield (SGA) or Tulsa (TUL). Each participant will be responsible for making their own arrangements to get to the airport to travel with the team. We will arrive in Puerto Rico by Saturday afternoon and be transported by van to our mission site for the week. All ground transportation to-and-from our work project and local excursions will be provided by PPM. We’ll return to the States Friday evening.

Passport: (NOT REQUIRED)

As a US territory, Passports are not required for travel to-and-from the island of Puerto Rico. You will, however, need a driver’s license or other form of official photo idea for check-in at the airport. Check the TSA website for a list of approved forms of identification.

Excursions:

During our time in Puerto Rico, we will visit several local beaches and other tourist attractions including the rainforest and picturesque Old San Juan. The cost of these excursions are included in the price of the trip.

Team Leader:

The Mission Team to Puerto Rico will be led by Rev. Dr. Charles Neff, university chaplain and director of the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life. Dr. Neff is a certified VIM team leader and has led multiple teams internationally since 2015 including to Puerto Rico, Belize, and the Bahamas.
